Decontamination and decommissioning(D&D) becomes one of the most important nuclear industries in the developed countries including USA, UK and France where the D&D for the retired nuclear facilities have been carried out on a large scale. D&D of the retired TRIGA MARK II and III research reactors and uranium conversion plant at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) have already been under way. Prompt countermeasure should be taken to deal with a lots of metallic wastes generated by dismantling the retired nuclear facilities. Melting technology has been known as the most effective technology for the volume reduction and recycling of the metallic wastes. The melting technology classifies into three large groups according to the type of melters such as induction, plasma and electric arc. During the course of melting of the metallic wastes contaminated with radioactive materials, the decontamination can be accomplished through volatilization of the radionuclides(e.g. Cs), transportation of the radionuclides(e.g. U) as an oxide to the slag, and homogeneous distribution of the radionuclides(e.g. Co) in the ingot resulting the reduction of specific radioactivity. Both the volatile radionuclide and non-volatile radionuclide which can be distributed in the slag are stabilized by the chemical binding with slag component. The slag of which the radioactivity is relatively high is disposed as the radioactive waste, while the ingot can be easily released or recycled on account of the decrease in the specific radioactivity due to the removal and the homogeneous distribution of the radioactivity.
