The treatment of ash from municipal waste incineration is facing several problems, such as the limited availability of landfill sites and secondary pollution from toxic substances. To solve these problems, a new slag resistance arc furnace was developed in this study. Through the tests with this commercial test plant, melting characteristics and running conditions of arc ash melting with cold top method are discussed.The result shows that it is able to get stable operation both in feeding ash and discharging melting slag from the arc furnace and also the melting slag has no toxic problem and meets the existing landfill quality standard. The concentration of HCl, NO2 and SOx in the flue gas could be reduced by using arc melting process.
