In this study, the physico-chemical characteristics of municipal solid waste(MSW) generated from a midium size rural town(A city) and a small rural town(Y gun) were investigated. We analysed and evaluated the physical components of each type of waste and also the amount of the three major components in each type of waste generated from each town. Furthermore we performed elemental analysis. Low heating value of MSW was calculated using bomb calorimeter. we also calculated leaching characteristic of heavy metal in MSW. Using data obtained in this type, we compared and analysed the physico-chemical characteristics of MSW generated from Y gun and A city. In this study, paper waste is the largest amount of waste and the second was food waste in both area. Density of MSW in A city was greater than Y gun. After analysing the three major components of the waste generated, we found that in residential area the ratio of the components was even and similar. However, in commercial area the three major components of the waste generated was uneven. In commercial area's was combustible contents was low while moisture value was high relatively. With regard to the analysis of elements, element C was consistently highest, O was second, H was third, and N, S, Cl were appeared irregularly. With regard to the low heating value, it was found that in Y gun the value was 1275.7kcal/kg compared with 1532.6kcal/kg in A city.
