The purpose of this study was to investigate biomechanical characteristics in soccer players diagnosed with osteoarthritis of lumbar facet joint and then compare them with those in healthy soccer players. We recruited 39 soccer players who were diagnosed with osteoarthritis of lumbar facet joint by facet joint block and 18 players without ailments. We performed biomechanical assessments in the pelvis and lower extremities (especially foot/ankle) to all subjects. The parameters measured in the pelvis were pelvic level, pelvic elevation angle in Trendelenburg position, pelvic rotation during stationary walking, and pelvic tilting during bending trunk. Those in foot/ankle were inversion and eversion angle including the measured neutral position at subtalar joint, forefoot angle to rearfoot, and angle of resting calcaneal stance position. The following shows parameters with statistical differences in the patient group: In pelvis, elevated left pelvic level in standing, insufficient right pelvic elevation in Trendelenburg position, asymmetrical pelvic rotation, and asymmetrical pelvic tilting; In foot/ankle, increased inversion angle and decreased eversion angle at right subtalar joint, and increased right calcaneal varus angle. In conclusion, The asymmetry of the pelvis and foot/ankle in the patient group was identified, and could be considered as one of the major causes of osteoarthritis of lumbar facet joint.
