The purpose of this study is to enhance English newspaper reading skills through strategy training. English newspapers were looked at as a useful text for reading strategy training because 1) they are authentic text; 2) offer information regarding a variety of current issues and 3) familiarize readers with the culture of English-speaking countries. For this study, two classes of 11th graders were given strategy training. The experimental group received strategy training with English newspapers. They were also encouraged to read the English newspapers out of class. The control group received strategy training with the textbook and supplementary materials. Before and after the experiment, students took reading tests and a questionnaire about their use of reading strategies. Initially, both groups demonstrated frequent use of cognitive and compensatory strategies, but limited use of metacognitive strategies and memory strategies. However, this finding was not changed after the training. Even so, the use of the English newspapers as a reading material appeared to have induced more strategy use than regular reading texts. Thus the experimental group showed more growth in reading ability. They also appeared to actively employ reading strategies because the English newspapers seem to have prompted more self-directed study.
