The purpose of this paper is to examine main issues of translation in modern Korean literature through the view of translation proposed by 'Haewaemunhakpa', in other words 'the school of foreign literature'. This school is a groupe of some scholars who studied foreign literature in the mid nighteen twenties for the purpose of introducing foreign literary works in a direct way, in other words by the way of translation. Lee Ha-Yun, Kim Jin-Seop, Jung In-Seop were main members of this groupe. The school of foreign literature brought out the various issues of translation and established a modern point of view of translation. The active discussion was made about the issues like the definition of translation, its necessity, its role in the acculturation, the possibility of translation, stylistic problems, the selection of authors or literary works to be translated and so on. In fact, these issues are still under discussion in the current translation studies. We tried to make clear the 'modernity' of the issues of translation proposed by the school of foreign literature, especially by bringing to a focus three points. First of all, we investigate the relation between Kim Oak‘s view of translation and that of 'the school of foreign literature'. Second, we examine crucial points from the viewpoint of modern translation theory : translation and culture, translation and literarture translation and language. Finally we explain the difference two versions of translation of the French symbolist poet Verlaine, version of translation by Kim Oak and that of Lee Ha-Yun, one of the main members of the school of foreign literature.
