This paper intends to clarify kisaeng and Cafe waitress who took the leading part in pleasure quarters such as 'yorijip(restaurant)' and cafe in colonial Korea. 'yorijip(restaurant)' in colonial period was a modern succession to the pre-modern cultural space for social life and entertainment in 1910-1920, while cafe was a new amusement quarter inciting the consumptive urban culture originated from the East Europe. However, both were the same products of colonial modernity which went through refraction and distortion under the mediation and control of Japanese colonialism. kisaeng and Cafe waitress were serving girls who made their body a material item to sell, being involved in the modern construction of sexuality in colonial Korea. Especially, the sexuality of them have something to do with the desire for free love and monogamous marriage ideology introduced and widely spread in colonial period. This paper tries to rediscover the existence of kisaeng and Cafe waitress, taking daily newspapers, mass magazine, documents, guidebook, and novels as texts. Furthermore, this analyses the process how the images of these women and their sexualities were constructed by the representation of various discourses and over the images of these women as victims of institutional powers such as the colonizer, capitalism, and patriarchy, this attempts to reconstruct the voice and desire of kisaeng and Cafe waitress in discourses. Finally, this quests for the historical origin of female identity as sexual agency through them.
