This study estimates the amenity value of paddy fields. Three different types of paddy fields are evaluated: cultivated paddy fields, idled paddy fields and paddy fields converted for nonagricultural purposes. A contingent ranking model has been constructed to derive the values. Various proportions of each type of paddy fields with different amounts of payment are suggested to the interviewees, and they are requested to assign a rank to each alternative. The results show that the value of preserving cultivated paddy fields is substantially higher than that of preserving idled paddy fields while the latter is not significantly different from the value of converted paddy fields. This finding suggests that rural amenity may be generated mainly from farming activity not from agricultural land itself.
