Objectives : The aim of this study is to examine the damages caused by natural disasters in the Korean population and to provide ground work for developing a policy of response and preparedness for natural disasters. Methods : All relevant literatures were reviewed through selected databases. Statistical data from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and Rural Development Administration (RDA) were included in the assessment. And the reports of the Korean Society of Emergency Medicine (KSEM), Korean Nursing Association (KNA), and Master's degree dissertations were also referred to, to evaluate the health impacts related to disasters. Results : The Korean population has suffered from many natural disasters. They are particularly vulnerable to water-related disasters, such as storms, hurricanes and droughts. Natural damages are expected to increase gradually due to global warming and changes in the agricultural environment. The disaster medical policy including emergency medical service system in the control of natural disasters must be activated in the early stages so it may minimize the damage to human life. However, the current emergency medical service system for natural disasters in Korea has shown many limitations. Conclusion : While a prevention program has been developed around the region where natural disasters frequently happen, the measures and emergency medical service system for the prevention of damage have improved little. The damage to farmers by natural disasters may be reduced with the improvement of physical and spiritual health services. A centrally governed emergency system for natural disasters that manages physical, psychological and social impacts is recommended.
