In recent years, a great number of studies have been carried out in analyzing naturally occurring conversation by applying conversation analysis (CA). This research explores a possibility of applying CA to analysis of dialogues in literary works, mainly in novels and plays. To achieve this goal, this study provides a brief overview of major topics in CA in terms of a turn-taking system, sequence organization, adjacency pairs, and repair, among others. Based on the assumption that CA notions can be applied to an analysis of dialogues in plays, this study characterizes turn-taking, adjacency pairs, repair phenomena reflected in the dialogues among the participants in plays. It also shows properties of dialogues in novels in terms of major CA topics. Particularly, this study shows author's involvement in the development of a storyline when adjacency rules are not observed in the dialogues among the participants. Such an analysis shows that a CA perspective is useful in exploring the relationship between author's narration and participants' dialogues in the development of a story. Finally, this study shows that CA is a useful tool for analyzing dialogues in literary works, particularly plays and novels, to understand complicated structures of literary works.
