In this article, we examined Chinese speakers’ production of word-initial and word-medial Korean stops, compared with native Korean speakers’. In the word-initial position, the measured voice onset time (VOT) values of tense stops, produced by both Korean and Chinese speakers, were significantly lower than those of aspirated and plain stops. Comparing aspirated stops with plain ones, we found that aspirated stops had longer VOT than plain stops in the Chinese group. On the contrary, the Korean group showed that the VOT values between aspirated and plain stops were not significantly different from each other. With regard to pitch, Korean speakers produced aspirated stops with a higher pitch than plain stops, but there was little difference in pitch between aspirated and plain sounds produced by Chinese speakers. In the word-medial position, while Korean speakers pronounced aspirated sounds with longer closure duration (CD) and plain stops with shorter CD, Chinese speakers did not produce aspirated and plain sounds distinctively in that the CD in plain stops was not significantly different from the one in aspirated stops. What is the most crucial difference between the two groups was the VOT of the word-medial plain stops. Given that the VOT values of the intervocalic plain stops in the Korean group were represented by negative numbers, Korean speakers pronounced them as voiced sounds. However, Chinese speakers did not show such a passive voicing of the plain stops. In addition, the measured pitch in the word-medial position also confirms that Chinese speakers failed to distinguish aspirated stops from plain stops because there was no significant difference in their pitch values.
