In the T’ang Dynasty(唐代 618~907), the social equality between women and men was established and women enjoyed relatively high level of freedom compared with other chinese dynasties. On the base of this social circumstances, marriage customs of the T’ang Dynasty was quite liberal and women’s consciousness of marriage was weakened. This study mainly concentrates on 『liang T’ang shu』(『兩唐書』)「lie nü zhuan」(「列女傳」) as the primary sources, for many articles of this period ignored the viewpoint of lie-nü(列女觀). Using case study method related to these two articles(『liang T’ang shu』(『兩唐書』)「lie nü zhuan」(「列女傳」), this research tries to find out 1) The concept and cause of Zhi(質) ㆍ Yi(義) demanded from women in the T’ang society, 2) women’s viewpoint on the fidelity problems. And finally this study attempts to analyze the social barrier deterring the realization of lie-nü-viewpoint(列女觀). In 『liang T’ang shu』(『兩唐書』)「lie nü zhuan」(「列女傳」), much information can be found which has direct connection with women’s fidelity problems. According to these articles, barbarian tribe and foreign culture took influence on the T’ang Dynasty and eventually the concept of fidelity cherished by chinese women was seriously weakened. This fact can also be supported by the information from 『liang T’ang shu』(『兩唐書』)「lie nü zhuan」(「列女傳」). It is quite certain that in the T’ang Dynasty remarriage can not be presumed illegal, because in this period family members did persuade their widow-relative to remarry. As already written above, it can also possibly inferred that a widow who chose not to remarry through out the rest of her life might struggles to maintain fidelity and at the same time needs much will-power and endeavor.
