Cicero, however, wrote many Books, among them De Republica (written in 54-51 B.C.) was very important, for he defined the Res Publica explicitly. As Scipio Africanus says (I, 39), res publica res publi, populus autem non omnis hominium coetus quoque modo congregatus, sed coetus multitudinis iuris consensu et utilitatis communione sociatus(It is the property of a people. But a people is not any collection of human beings but an assembleage of people in large numbers associated in an agreement with respect to justice and a partnership for the common good). But at that time that the book had been completed, the Republic had already not been functioning effectively, for the triumviri joined hands for a while, the power struggle between Caesar and Pompeius become rather acute. Especially the death of Iulia(in B.C. 54), a daughter of Caesar and a wife of Pompeius and that of Crassus(in B.C. 53), caused to split the coalition of two. As Laelius said (I, 63), the sailor, when the sea suddenly grows rough and the invalid when his illness becomes severe, both implore the assistance of one man in the other words, moderator rei publicae, rector et gubernator civitatis, or princeps. In this article, I compared the some words of De Republica and Res Gestae Divi Augusti, and supposed that the two books were related each other. In other words, my point is that Octavian/Augustus, in his Res Gestae Divi Augusti, might justify his Principate by using the Cicero’s ideas in the De Republica and so, he himself seemed to assert that he would be rector civitatis, or princeps in the ‘Res Publica Restituta’.
