Overproduced nitric oxide (NO) by inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) causes tissue damage, chronic
inflammation, and carcinogenesis. In this view, the potential iNOS inhibitors have been considered as
anti-inflammatory or cancer chemopreventive agents. In this study, we investigated the potential capacities
of morachalcone A isolated from the heartwood of Artocarpus communis as anti-inflammatory or cancer
chemopreventive agent. Morachalcone A exhibited inhibitory activities against lipopolysaccharide-induced
nitric oxide production in cultured RAW 264.7 cells. Using western blot and reverse
transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction analysis, morachalcone A showed the suppression of iNOS protein
and mRNA expression in a dose-dependent manner. These findings suggested that morachalcone A might
be a potential lead candidate for anti-inflammatory or cancer chemopreventive agent.
