This paper attempted to explore some images and representations of Islam produced by protestant church in multicultural Korea, focusing on Islamophobia. Recently in Korean protestant churches Islamophobia became a hot issue. Some fundamentalist missionaries reminded church leaders and communities of the gradual Islamization of European countries such as UK, France, Germany. According to their opinion, a lot of Islam missionaries already entered into Korea for the Islamization of the Korean society in the near future. They, as Islamophobes, shout that Islam is a religion of violence and evil spirit, also saying that Quran and the life of Muhammad demand faithful muslim to oppress other religions. Islamophobic protestant missionaries strongly demanded that Korean church try to take a measure to block the Islamization of Korean church and society.
The majority of Islamophobic missionaries’s arguments, however, are based on uncorrect statistics and information. The reason why they disseminate Islamophobia, an unreasonable hatred and dread of Islam, is connected with the crisis of Korean protestant church. Recently Korean protestantism suffered from the decrease of number of believers as well as much criticisms from civil society. As a way of escaping from such a critical situation, some fundamentalist missionaries and church leaders chose a strategy of diffusing Islamophobia. It seems that this is a kind of scapegoat politics.
