This paper intends to show the entire aspects of traditional death rituals
of Korea and examine the appearances of transformations of them in contemporary Korean society.
In showing the entire aspects of traditional death rituals of Korea the
key point is that natural death and nonnatural death are differentiated in traditional
Korean society. According to this differentiation this paper classifies the
traditional death rituals of Korea into two types, that is natural death rituals
and nonnatural death rituals. These traditional death rituals of Korea have
multi-religious character.
And this paper examine the appearances of transformations of them in
contemporary Korean society in three aspects, namely type of death rituals,
process of death rituals, and subject and place of death rituals.
In type of death rituals, we can see the tendency that the various types
of death rituals are diminished. And the processes of traditional death rituals
of Korea are becoming to lose the function of rites of passage and festivity.
The subject and place of death rituals are changed from family, local community, home into religious organizations or jangryesikjang(장례식장), hospital.
These transformations seem to accelerate the following tendencies, that
is change of death awareness, division of death from place of life, rising of
religious organizations as an important subject of death ritual.
