Traditional craftwork, so to speak, inherent craftwork formed by historical transmission for long time, has the meaning that it is such kind of craftworkhanded down by the lineage already form in earlier periods. Thus, traditional craftwork can be taken to have the meaning of the craftwork that has been continuing the vein established by transmission in modern times. That is tosay, the traditional craftwork, among other things, is a great cultural asset thatthe nation has inherited from its antecedents. As they arealso traditional craftwork transmitted and formed l over long time, craftworks in the region of Jeollanamdo can be said to be excellent traditional ones that have succeeded to particular techniques by accommodating productive methods and conventions based on nature and climate in this region. However, though traditional craftwork naturally distinguishes working areas and techniques according to its materials and on the other hand, has specialty since it necessitates special natural materials and the special techniques that deal with them, it has come to have its small economical scale as one of its characteristics due to the fact that it has been its instinct to maintain thesmall productive scale because it has been developed on the basisofprofessional handcraft that has regional characteristics. Moreover, needless tosay, given that traditional craftwork takes handwork asits basic way of production, it has been naturally continued up to now with self righteousness and exclusiveness as its features. Though we need to make multi-sided attempts in order to activate traditional craftworks in the domestic market and take them into the global market, we should first improve workshop facilities for industrialization, and make sufficient human resources available. Also, they should have the ability to develop forms, quality, and utilities of craftworks, and especially we should make core effortsto develop special technology. In addition, to make plan for goods and developthem, marketing investigation and research should be carried out in advance, and only when such extensive conditions have been equipped with, we can attend the industrialization. That is to say, it seems that for the industrialization of traditional craftwork, improvement in various areas including facilities of relevant companies, human resources, development, and distribution, and for this we should now make attempts at commercialization of ‘craftwork culture’ on the basis of tradition. Thus, we cannot help converting structural matters for industrialization as well as recognition shift also in Jeollanamdo’s traditional craftwork, and we should provide a better productive system and establish a complete plan for activation to take them as momenta for new development.
