This study examines 『 Gift of Music』(Onggakuno Okurimono), one of the three Japanese Primary school music textbooks, to understand the characteristics of Japanese traditional music shown in the textbooks. It is also an attempt to seek new vision, orientation and teaching methodologies for the education of Korean traditional music.
Throughout the analysis, educational content and activities in relation with songs, instrumental music, composition and appreciation are examined. In addition, the features of the traditional music for each grade and the way they are dealt with are studied.
『 Gift of Music』 is compiled to help children understand Japanese traditional music with the experience and understanding of music of other countries. The content of this textbook is presented from the perspective of music culture and its various music activities help children appreciate and express traditional elements. It is remarkable that the book is designed to let children appreciate traditional music in a modern way through various pieces of music and different activities.
