Moon, Gui-Sun. 2010. Null Arguments Redux. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal. 18(1). 67-92. The main purpose of the paper is to claim that the null arguments in both subject and object positions should be identified as pro in the subject/object-drop languages such as Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and so on, arguing against Huang's (1984, 1991) null-topic variable analysis and the option of NP-ellipsis for sloppy identity reading proposed by Abe (2009). Furthermore, it is argued that pro in Korean shows the same pattern as English pronouns in relation to its antecedent: Just as English pronouns can be classified as referential pronouns and bound (variable) pronouns depending on the properties of their antecedents, Korean pros can be distinguished as referential pros and bound pros. It is thus claimed that pro is identified as referential if its antecedent is a referring expression, and that it is determined as bound pro if its antecedent has quantificational property. Bound pro can be further differentiated from bound variable pro depending on whether it is c-commanded by its antecedent. Likewise, ambiguity arises according to the properties of pros: strict reading is derived when pro is identified as referential, whereas sloppy reading is brought out when a null argument is determined as bound (variable) pro.
