Kim, Changik. “Constraints on Presuppositional Accommodation.” Modern Studies in English Language & Literature 52.4 (2008): 21-51. The purposes of this paper are to investigate some constraints on presuppositional accommodation and to seek central constraints out of some constraints investigated. Accommodation which Lewis brought into use is a complex form of inference based on considerations including semantics, psycho-linguistics, general principles of pragmatics, and specific calculations of the goal of discourse participants. Accommodation is an inferential process which is subject to pragmatic constraints. Four different constraints on accommodation have been investigated within Discourse representation theory, a constraint called as ‘bridging’ within psycho-linguistics, and other three constraints within conversational principles and information structures. Each of them has its own descriptive merit and seems to be well motivated. It is argued that consistency constraint has its capacity to replace five out of eight constraints. In sum, consistency constraint on accommodation could be taken to be central and essential.(Hoseo University)
