The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Korean EFL college students's reading strategy use and their English reading proficiency. Also, it attempted to provide an overview of the research related to second language learners‘ reading strategies. In order to accomplish the purpose of this study, 57 college students responded to the Carrell(1989)'s reading strategy questionnaire which comprised five sections (reader's confidence, repair strategies, effective reading strategies and reading difficulties, definitions of good readers). They also completed TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) to determine their reading competence in English. Results of the study indicated that, for these college students, there seemed to be more top-down orientation to what were perceived as effective and difficulty-causing reading strategies. Also, the results indicated that repair strategies students use were found to be significantly correlated with reading proficiency. Here, using repair strategies which means that students used metacognitive reading strategies, and they possessed metacognitive knowledge of what they read and how they read seems to be a significantly predictable factor for their reading proficiency. Drawing upon these findings, implications for EFL or ESL students' reading proficiency and reading strategies development, and specific recommendations for future research are proposed as well.
