This paper deals with information structure in discourse in terms of topic-focus related to change in word order and given-new information. In this paper, I argue that information structure in discourse is processed according to some organizational principles: i) new information tends to feature near the end of information units as focus and given information at the beginning as topic; ii) the degree of information content of a sentence can determine its structure in discourse; and iii) in discourse the focus of one sentence tends to become the topic of the next one, and thus propositions are linked into an ordely train. These principles have been shown to be applicable to a text according to Bruce’s(1988) ‘wave’ model.
