This study, first, shows that the distribution of three acoustic cues, i.e., frication noise time, rise time, aspiration time, used for contrast of two Korean fricatives /ㅅ/ and /ㅆ/, is dependent on the positions where /ㅅ/ and /ㅆ/ are placed. The finding is that, while aspiration time is crucial in distinction of the two fricatives in the word-initial positions, both frication noise time and rise time play a role in contrasting the two sounds in the word-medial positions. This implies that different acoustic cues can be employed in different positions to distinguish two sounds. Secondly, this study, applied also to the analysis of foreign learners' pronunciation of /ㅅ/ and /ㅆ/ in Korean, reveals that there are differences in the distribution of those three acoustic cues between native speakers' and non-native speakers' utterances of /ㅅ/ and /ㅆ/.
