This study was focused to evaluate Daphnia sp.(domestic origin) as indicating organism for acute bioassay, comparing to Daphnia magna used as standard one internationally. Standard bioassay technique by USEPA and OECD and advanced toxicity testing method developed in this study based on thermal tolerance behavior of daphnia were used. The proposed testing method, short-term bioassay based on thermal tolerance behaviors of both Daphnia magna and Daphnia sp., were closely correlated with the standard 24-hour toxicity by using Daphnia magna. in assessing the test toxicant such as heavy metals. Sensitivity of heavy metal toxicity to Daphnia magna was listed in order from highest to lowest: Cd>Hg>Cu>Pb>Zn>Ni>As>Cr, while was that to Daphnia sp. listed in order of Cd>Hg>Zn>Cu>Pb>As>Ni>Cr. Also, the proposed toxicity testing method was well applicable to various chemicals as well as heavy metals. It was also effective in testing toxicity of industrial application. It was therefore proven to achieve the goal of reliably and rapidly assessing the eco-toxicological risk.
