This objective of this study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of substrate removal and granular sludge formation in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process using glucose and acetic acid as carbon source. As a result, the pH values for glucose as carbon source decreased from 6.3 to 4.5, while the pH values for acetic acid increased in the range of 7.0 to 7.8 during a cycle. These results reveal that carbon source in influent play an important role in forming sludge granules as well as substrate removal. The efficiencies of COD, T-N and T-P removal for glucose and acetic acid in GS-SBR were in the range of 44.0-94.7%, 31.0-70.2%, and 28.0-70.0%, respectively. COD concentration during a cycle of 3hr was reduced up to 50% of total reduction amount within 30min after start up. The characteristics of granular sludge investigated by using microscopy observation was compact and strong in structure, compared with conventional flocculent activated sludge. This indicates that was due to be various biomass species without biomass washout in the granular sludge reactor.
