Recently, rainwater harvesting is a worldwide trend how to effectively manage and use the existing water resources. This study is aimed to identify if the rain water of urban area could be used domestically without additional treatment. The water quality variation was monitored at each cumulative rainfall in the duration time. The sampling points are selected by land use of the city, such as residential, commercial, industrial and rural area. The rainwater collection system consists of 1m2 collecting plate and 7 sampling bottles of 3L connected to the plate in series to check the water quality variation during the rainfall. The results show that, rainwater is adequate to drink and are similar by regions. Measured pH in initial precipitation sample ranged from 4.1 to 4.7 and the levels of color is 7∼5 and turbidity is 0.5∼7.43. The quality of rainwater comply with the Korean Water Quality Standard (KWQS) for Drinking Water. The concentrations of most heavy metals analyzed here were too low to consider or under detection limit except Zinc. The concentration of Zinc was in range of 0.271∼0.316 mg/L. VOCs or other inorganic pollutants, CN, Phenols, etc. were not detected from any rainwater samples. From the investigation, it is found that the first 3mm rainfall is in relatively contaminated conditions and doesn't comply with the KWQS, however the water quality of subsequent rainfall could meet the standard in all sampling sites. Consequently, the rainwater in urban area could be an effective alternative water source if an appropriate collecting system is applied.
