This experiment was aimed to determine the effect of auxin sources and application methods on the rooting in cuttings of Rhododendron species. The percentage of rooting of cuttings was much higher in R. yedoense var. poukhanense than R. japonicum regardless of auxin application method and concentration. Auxin, expecially, IBA 4000 mg·L-1 increased the rooting rate up to 31.3% compared to 12.5% in untreated control. However, the percentage of root development was still much lower than that of untreated R. yedoense var. poukhanense (89.6%). NAA 4000 mg ·L-¹ further increased the rate of rooting in R. yedoense var. poukhanense and, thus, more than 95% of cuttings produced adventitious root in NAA treatment. When endogenous hormone contents of cuttings between Rododenron species were examined, IAA content was highest in R. yedoense var. poukhanense, followed by R. schlippenbachii, R. mucronulatum, and R. japonicum. Between plant portions of cuttings, IAA contents was highest in apical meristem followed by stem and leaf. There was no differences in ABA content between species and plant portions. However, R. mucronulatum contained higher amount of cytokinin compared to other two species. And regardless of Rododendron species, the distribution of cytokinin was higher in leaf and then followed by stem and apical meristem. Thus, only IAA seemed to be closely associated with the potential of root development in cutting of Rododendron species.
