ABSTRACT:Mugwort, Artemisia princeps Pamp., has been used traditionally as a natural medicine in the far east including Korea. In order to understand the effects of climatic environment on the useful components of mugworts, 210 genotypes were collected in 48 locations representing 3 regions from 2004 to 2006. Leaves of collected mugworts were analyzed for eupatilin and jaceosidin. The variation of eupatilin content in three regions and the relationship between eupatilin and meteorological factors were likewise investigated. The eupatilin content was 43.8mg per 100g leaves on the average. Eupatilin could be absent or could be as high as 228.0 mg. The average jaceosidin was 12.8 mg per 100g leaves. The range was from 0 to 73.8mg. The eupatilin content of mugwort harvested in the western region was higher compared with those harvested in similar altitudes of the southern and eastern Korea. Seasonal variation of eupatilin content indicated that eupatilin content was highest from May 20 to July 10.There was no significant relationship between eupatilin content and meteorological factors during growing periods, but there was negative correlation in average temperature and precipitation, and positive correlation in diurnal change of temperature and sunshine hours.
