This Thesis aims at exploring the modern consciousness in the An-seo's poems. An-seo is a poet and poetic theorist in the beginning of Korean modern poetry. But his poems and poetic ruts have been underestimated Generally An-seo is uttered a poet that had not enough modern consciousness and his poems are premodern. But he is very important poet that search for modern poem's identity in 19th, the beginning of Korean modern poetry. Although his poems has many defects, for example having no implication, own individuality, and poetic devices, they are results of his groping and agony. An-seo shows many poetic experimentations. They can be explained the poet's modern consciousness. He did his best to find out new poems distinguished former ages's them. He recognized that the poems are written in words and focused on the words. And he identified the rhythm as poetic identity distinguished from the prose and sought the way of introducing the rhythm into our poems to cope with the situation in which the poems were consistently changed into the prose after the period of enligtenment. An-seo's various experiments are now playing a role as a criterion to establish the Korean modern poems. Also he was concerned about Esperanto, and considered it had international possibility that Korean poems extend their power. These aspects show An-seo is a symbol of modern poet.
