This study examines the background to the establishment of Korean literary houses, their management, the current problems, and the future direction for improvement. Recently, we may see the fast growth of literary houses in Korea, but, there are a little research on how to manage them effectively. There are two important factors that lead to the increase of the literary houses. A literary house stimulates local development: It consolidates the sense of identity of local population, and it serves as a cultural space for various activities. It also contributes to the popularization of literature. It is very difficult to classify the literary houses into some categories, but it is worthwhile to do so. We can classify the literary house according to whether it is author's house or not and who financially sponsors and manages it. This classification model will set a good example for the management of the future literary house. It is not easy to prescribe the functions or the roles of the literary house for its diversity. This study, however, classifies the functions into 5 categories, that is, the center for education, research, literary museum, local tourism, and local cultural activities. Korean literary houses are confronted with two crucial problems at the moment: a few experts in literary or cultural management and the insufficient finance. The ‘Arts Council Korea’, with the collaboration of the ‘Korea Literature House Association’, runs short-term training programs for the workers of the literary houses, but these programs need to be extended for a long-term specialized training. Local governments should support the literary house for financial problems and the literary house itself should also develop more profitable programs on its own. Recently Korean literary houses turn their direction into a cultural complex beyond merely a literary center. This study proposes Ecomusée, which works as an institution for the revitalization of local culture and economy in Europe. Local literary houses, which give an emphasis to ecology, territory, and population, can play a key role in making the region a must-see tourist spot. For that matter, it is important to develop effective management programs, based on the cooperation of both public institutions and private organizations
