The purpose of this study is to investigate the process and possibility of integrating content and language through the use of content-based literary texts in EFL primary English education. To accomplish the objectives, the following research questions were proposed: 1) What are some aspects of primary school children’s learning contents through content-based literary texts written in English? 2) How do reading-writing activities using content-based literary texts influence children’s learning of English reading and writing? Data for both qualitative and quantitative analysis were collected from students’ journals, the teacher’s field notes, questionnaires, interviews, students’ comments on the lessons, test results, surveys and others. Data analysis revealed the following results. First, participants in the study showed the process of understanding meaningful contents through the use of literary texts as a scaffold of content learning, of forming basic concepts through diverse vocabulary activities, of deep understanding of the contexts by using self-directed strategies, and of extending their knowledge through sharing. Second, participants experienced a new way of learning English reading and writing through the integration of language and contents by using English as a means of learning information and response activities. Additionally, they showed their progress in English skills. Based upon the results of the study, several suggestions are provided for future studies.
