As transport by more than one mode of transport is becoming more and more common transport form, an article regarding multimodal transport is placed as the first of transport document articles under UCP 600. This article does not refer to any particular name of a document. Rather, it describes the way goods are moved utilizing at least two different modes of transport. Also, multimodal transport operator is deleted in the signatory, and the name of master need not be stated under UCP 600. There is a big difference between how bankers perceive the multimodal transport document and how the shipping industry perceives it. For the shipping industry, if a transport document has the title of a multimodal transport document, and is subject to a specific set of rules, even though a single mode of transport is used, it is regarded as an MMTD. But the bankers' general rule is that the examination of a document presented under L/C will focus on the content of the document rather than the title. This means that when L/C calls for an MMTD, any document that fulfills the requirements of UCP Article 19 will be accepted. ICC Opinion states if the first leg of the journey is by sea, an on board notation is required, and that if goods are dispatched by air, the date of dispatch. If L/C requires ocean B/L, and at the same time states that an MMTD is acceptable, it makes the L/C ambiguous. In this case, L/C must state whether there is any place of receipt different from port of loading or any final destination different from port of discharge. The term "freight forwarder MMTD not acceptable" is not a clear condition. Without further clarification in L/C, the applicant would bear the risk of ambiguity.
