The purpose of this study is to evaluate chitosan coagulant as an alternative coagulant of aluminium containing coagulants for removal of turbidity in coagulation and sedimentation process for water treatment. Jar tester was used to know the removal efficiency of kaolinite according to coagulant type(chitosan and PAC) and coagulation factors(alkalinity, coagulant dosage, and setting time). The contribution of applied coagulants for removal of kaolinite was also examined. Specific conclusions derived from this study are as follows. Optimal conditions using chitosan for removal of kaolinite by coagulation and sedimentation process were alkalinity 114 mg/L and coagulant dosage 10 mg/L, and the optimal condition with PAC to remove the kaolinite were alkalinity 32 mg/L and coagulant dosage 50 mg/L. The formation of floc with chitosan was more quick and dense than that of PAC. Therefore it will be more economic by the shortening of reaction time and the reduction of the volume of reaction tank. The contributions of chitosan and PAC for removal of turbidity as shown upgrade of removal efficiency were 86% and 56%,respectively. Because the difference of removal efficiency between chitosan and PAC was not significant, it is potentially possible to use the chitosan as an alternative coagulant in water treatment processes.
