Objectives: This research is conducted to investigate the problem drinking and alcohol expectancy among female college students, female workers and housewives. Method: The sample consists of 504 women (212 college students, 139 workers, and 153 housewives) in Buk-gu of Gwangju city who understood the purpose of this research and agreed to participate in the survey during the period from May 7 to May 20, 2008. These results are then compared with the year 2005 data for which 511 females (199 college students and 312 workers) were surveyed. Results: 1) The ratios of problem drinkers that is defined by those who marked over 8 points in the AUDIT test were 52.8, 22.3, and 17.0% of the college students, workers, and housewives, respectively, showing significant differences among the three groups. The AUDIT point of the college student group showed significant increase since 2005. However, the ratios of college students, workers, and housewives who marked CAGE point of 2 or higher were 13.7, 10.1, and 10.5%, respectively, and showed little differences. 2) The alcohol expectancy of the college student group appeared highest with 27.51 point and followed by the worker and the housewife groups that had 23,50 and 21.78 points, respectively. In the post-hoc comparison, the alcohol expectancy of the student group was significantly higher than the worker and housewife groups and also increased from 2005. Conclusion: This research revealed that drinking problem is most serious among college students, indicating that alcohol prevention programs and education need to be brought into action with a priority to this group.
