Kant and Lotz attempt to overcome the problem of traditional metaphysics. I am going to compare and evaluate their theories in terms of being and subject, Apriorität and transcendence, and theory and practice. They all positively accept the active working of the modern subject. But they set up differently the relation between being and subject. Kant kept the active working of modern subject tied in space and time from the unhistorical constituent viewpoint, and then tried to approach ‘being itself’ not theoretically but practically. Lotz, on the other hand, accepted Maréchal's ‘dynamisme intellectuel’ and assigned both constituent and abstractive working to the knowing subject, and then tried to make this subject approach being itself rationally beyond space and time. By doing this, Lotz tried to overcome a mismatch between understanding and reason, theoretical reason and practical reason. So as to do this work successfully, he is analysing the process shifting from ‘eidetische Erfahrung’ to ‘ontologische Ferfahrung’, from ‘ontologische Erfahrung’ to ‘metaphysische Erfahrung’, and from ‘metaphysische Erfahrung’ to ‘religiöse Erfahrung’. He especially makes efforts to show us that we can overcome Kant’s problem with analysing ‘meditation’. I will suggest that Lotz’s position can be an alternative to overcome the violence of modern subject, and to harmonize the traditional ‘being’ and modern subject.
