The total numbers of 617 pieces of Ancient wooden strip has been excavated except the ones listed in the Ancient Wooden Strip with Inscription in Korea(韓國의 古代木簡). Out of these, it is estimated that ancient letters are found in about 350 pieces. We can distinguish them in two categories in terms of the shapes and the writing styles described in them. First, there are critical differences in their shapes and the period of their uses. The Korean ancient wooden strips, used together with paper around 6-7 A.C., have totally different shapes with Chinese ones which usually present the shape of file wooden strip(編綴簡). Considering the shapes and writing styles of wooden strips excavated up until now, we can hardly expect to have more excavations of “file(編綴)” shaped wooden strips in the future. In aspects of contents, they are single wooden strip(單獨簡) categorized in sign post(楬)” such as name register(名籍類) or list of goods(荷札類). Therefore, we can assume that they are closely related with low class administrative service. We hardly see the use of punctuation sign(符號) in the description comparing with Chinese wooden scroll. In addition, the position of its title is distinguishable. It is flexible depending on the purpose of authors in the Chinese wooden scroll found in jin, han age. Meanwhile, the titles are always positioned in the first line of the first page in Korean wooden strips. We believe that this feature is affected by the writing format of paper. Second, the wooden strip represents the social lives of Korean people in those times. The Wolseong(月城) wooden strip and the Sungsan(城山) Haman(咸安) fortress wall wooden strip found at Silla(新羅) provides the substantial evidences of understanding the flows of goods between capital and local provinces. I sense that the current studies do not seem to fully analyze the structural and social characteristics of the strips excavated so far. The further excavations of strips without new contents and shapes might discourage researcher’s academic passion on the field. In this paper, I present the importance of the publication of dictionary in order to thrive the studies on Korean wooden strips. Publication of dictionary is fundamental of accurate understanding of Korean wooden strips, even it helps to study on Chinese or Japanese wooden strips. One of critical problems of current studies of Korean wooden strips is that they are researched by individuals without any commonly agreed encyclopedia which inevitably results in the arbitrary or subjective interpretation. Publication of encyclopedia of Korean wooden strip eliminates the mistranslation. Comparative shape studies between Japanese, Chinese and Korean wooden strips can be the preliminary study. However, the publication of encyclopedia is more advanced than the simple comparative study, which can take a crucial role in Ancient Korean wooden strip study. Even though the number of Korean wooden strips excavated so far is smaller than the ones of Chinese and Japanese, the publication of structured and organized encyclopedia will provide a stable historical status with the characteristics of Korean wooden strips as the “bridge” in Ancient East Asian society. We can clearly establish the communicative structure and commonalities in Ancient East Asian society through the Korean wooden strips.
