Hanji, used as a base material for painting, is composed of hydrophilic mulberry cellulose fibers and has a porous form. Therefore, sizing treatment is essential to fix the pigment well and prevent it from spreading. Typical surface treatment method is sizing using glue and alum. In addition to this treatment, as a method of traditional painting and a body pigment, apply white pigment on base material. Among the various white pigments, Hobun is a natural pigment made of shells of shellfish such as cotton shells and oysters. It is lighter and easier to mix than other inorganic pigments and used for background treatment because of its characteristics that do not discolor when used with glue. Prior studies on the surface-treated Hanji with Hobun are insufficient, and scientific studies on the effect of surface treatment with calcium carbonate in Hobun on Hanji are also urgently needed. Therefore, in this study the surface characteristics of Hanji appearing according to background treatment for each condition were evaluated using Hobun as a body pigment. As a result, Hobun would affect the roughness when surface treatment was performed due to uneven particle size and shape. However, when low concentration of Hobun was applied, gap in Hanji was filled most appropriately. And it was observed that the colored layer was formed. In addition, the brightness and whiteness increase significantly. It will affect the sharpness of colored pigments.
