The purpose of this study is to examine the aesthetic characteristics of medieval women’s dress in Azzedine Alaïa’s collection from the perspectives of asceticism and causticism. The research questions guiding this study are as follows: (1) What is the relationship between the social and cultural background of the Middle Ages and the development of women’s dress? (2) How can asceticism and causticism – the aesthetic characteristics of medieval women’s dress – be defined? (3) What are the aesthetic characteristics of medieval women’s dress in Alaïa’s design philosophy and collections from 1982 to 2017? (4) What are the common aesthetic characteristics of Alaïa’s work and medieval women"s dress? Literary research and content analysis were the research methods used. Specifically, 243 photographs of medieval women’s dress were examined to analyze the historical development process and aesthetic characteristics of women’s dress. In addition, 573 works – extracted from 14 haute couture and 43 prêt-á-porte collections published in Alaïa’s exhibition catalog and the official Fondation Azzedine Alaïa website – were analyzed to examine the aesthetic characteristics of dress in the Middle Ages. The results revealed that the aesthetic attributes inherent in medieval women’s dress overlap with the aesthetic attributes of asceticism, including robustness, abstinence, concealment, reduction, contradiction, and majesty. The aesthetic attributes of causticism were also derived, including sensuality, exaggeration, temptation, femininity, purity, and dignity. Based on these attributes, the aesthetic characteristics of medieval women’s dress present in Alaïa’s collections were concluded as follows: (1) the beauty of dignified abstinence expressed through respect for the natural proportions and balance of the female body; (2) the beauty of formative construction created by structural realism based on the fundamental body; (3) the beauty of elegant sensuality, implying a secret passion and eroticism; and (4) the beauty of sublime femininity, expressing the sublime dignity of women through ascetic human exploration.
