Abstract A Study on the Mission Work and the Life of Dr. Robert L. Goette(1960-1987) who came to Korea after the Korean War Lee, Chung Soon (Baekseok University) Dr & Mrs. Robert L. Goette and three little children came to Korea. Summer 1960. Dr. Goette was sent as an educational missionary of PCUSA(the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A) in 1960. He was born in Florida. He was a graduate of the University of Florida, where he received his Ph.D degree when he was 23 years old. Before coming to Korea, Dr.Goette worked for the E. I. DuPont Company, Textile Fibers Dept. and enjoyed flying his own plane. He was also a private pilot as a hobby. Dr. Goette was a PCUSA missionary for 10 years before ‘becoming a Christian’ in 1970. While his family was on furlough that year in America, he attended a training session with Campus Crusade for Christ and he heard the Gospel (Ephesians 2:8-9). The Good News of Jesus became real to him and it changed his life. The Bible came alive to him, and he found he had a desire to share the wonderful news of Jesus Christ. In Dr. Goette’s 27 years of missionary service in Korea, especially the 26 years at Hannam University we find that those years can be divided into two parts. The first ten years, 1961-1970, he was spent trying to do enough good works to earn his way into heaven. Much was accomplished in those early years. He established Korea’s first ever Science Research Association in the campus 1966. He developed the department of Chemistry at Hannam University and displayed outstanding ability and excellence in training students of chemistryThe second part of Dr Goette’s time at Hannam was from 1971-1987. While he was still involved in the chemistry department he began to focus with help from many others on the spiritual development of individuals on the campus. During his furlough year of 1970, he personally experienced afresh the work of the Holy Spirit. Thereafter he devoted himself completely to sharing his faith in Jesus Christ. After coming back to Korea in 1971 from furlough in America, he was very concerned about the eternal destiny of the faculty, staff and students at Hannam University. He operated a Christian book Service Room. He directed the formation of faculty, staff and student Bible study groups for Spiritual Multiplication. In particular Dr. Goette introduced the course "Bible and Science" from the second semester in 1976 in Korea and was the first person who teach such a course. It became the cornerstone of the Korea Association for Creation Research 1981. He was active as an advisor of the Korea Association for Creation Research. In these ways he kept alive the flame of campus evangelism. All these activities, in the spirit of Christ, have contributed to education, mission and social service. Dr. Goette has appreciated all those who worked along side of him during years that he was at Hannam University. He gives God all the glory that all he has done in Korea was by the grace of God. 1972, Dr. Goette was president of Taejon Campus of Soongjun university (now Hannam University). He stressed that the university’s methods of operation should be based on Biblical truths and not necessarily on the world's standards. Our business operations, teaching methods, admission policies, and course content should all be based on the Christian worldview. He stated there should be a strong, born-again Christian faculty with a common concern for the total development of each individual student in body, mind and spirit. In February of 1987, Dr. Goette returned to America for good, and became a member of Association for Biblical Research, June 1987 and until May 1993. He was a board member of Creation Research Society 1995-1999. Although Dr. Goette left Korea 1987, his mission work and life are still having a major impact in the Korean church and society. Because of his influence it is common today for churches and schools to courses contrasting evolution and creation.
