This present dissertation has the aim to fathom out the disparities in the social images appearing in the national-language textbook for middle school in Korea and Japan, on the base of Lee(2013) that has previously analyzed the illustrations of an elementary school in Korea and Japan. In case of Korea, the textbook tends to avail itself of illustrations without the limit of pages, carrying a number of the ornamental pictures and especially making them ancillary. On the contrary, in Japan, there is vivacious researches and appraisals on illustrations and illustrators. There lie individual singularities in that the national-language textbook of Korea gives rise to concreteness plus vividness of realism, and the Japanese textbook leads students to think by sort of abstract illustrations. In the light of the social values, including ideology, the discrepancies in quality and quantity of gender which used to be social issues are much wide. In the textbook of Korea, the conventional wisdom about the role of parents in family is delineated as debilitated, however, the role of female is still neglected or spurned in public affairs. Additionally, it follows with nature that as the male characters occupy to 80~90%, men appear more often. Korea has it that illustrations of the textbook is family-oriented and various types about it. On the other hand, ones of middle schools in Japan scarcely have the family-related illustrations. The values of allegiance and filial duty is relatively decreased in the textbook of middle schools in Korea. Both of the two counties have a strong tendencies to preserve the ideology of the traditions: Korea heavily centered on the traditional tale and social customs, though, Japan did on such culture-allied illustrations as literary works and book, drama, and pictures. Turning on middle school, Japan makes explicit discernments between elementary school and middle school by actively adopting the texts which is on the foundation of the illustrative materials denoting the statistics and figures. Contrastingly. the textbook of Korea has a great deal of literary texts, and doesn’t grow from the frame of family. Accordingly, it makes an impression that the national-language textbook of Korea is aligned with the textbook of an elementary school. I propose to contemplate this aspect in the next research.
