This paper aims to account for what makes negative imperatives available in English, as opposed to Modern Greek and many Romance languages. In explaining the incompatibility between preverbal negative markers of type X0 and imperatives in Modern Greek and most Romance languages, at least three different lines of analyses have been advanced: negative imperatives in those languages are not possible because (i) imperatives lack TP, which arguably affects the presence of NegP (Zanuttini 1996); (ii) negation of type X0 blocks PF morphological merger of an imperative verb with its (abstract) affix (Bošković 2004); or (iii) negation takes wide scope over the imperative force, causing semantic anomaly (Han 1998). By implementing each of these approaches, we argue that negative imperatives in English are true imperatives in that (i) not only negation of type X0 but also TP is present below CP in the structure of an imperatives; (ii) PF morphological merger of an imperative verb with T0 is not blocked by Neg0, with the help of do-support; and (iii) negation is never able to take scope over the imperative force because of the structural make-up of an English imperative clause.
