Symbol has been playing an important role in architectural expression nowadays, and campus environment is no different. Especially, physically symbolic elements have been used as means of express brand identity in Universities faced with severe competition with reducing number of college students. The purpose of this study is to understand the usage time-zone of campus environment, to define the correlation between campus differentiation and loyalty of university, and to examine symbolic elements of outdoor space in campus environment. For the research method, questionnaires were carried out targeting college students in 4 Universities located at Seoul. The results of this study as follows: First, the college students spend less than 2 hours in outdoor campus mostly during morning or lunch time. Second, the three factors of the environmental differentiation, 'outdoor environment','indoor classroom', and 'support facilities', were all highly correlated which, after all, influence the overall differentiation as well as the university loyalty. Third, it was found that symbolic elements such as ‘UI(University Identity)’, 'symbol tower', 'the main building', and 'library' express the university identity. However, the most representative symbolic element were ‘historically beautiful buildings’, ‘well known symbol tower’, ‘newly remodeled library’, and ‘main street or main stairs in outdoor campus’.
