Objective: This study was conducted by measuring quantity of oral bacteria in children aged between 5 and 9 years to find out correlation between oral bacteria and halitosis. Methods: Saliva was extracted after using mouth rinse of Exgene Clinic SV mini Kit (GeneAll, Seoul, Korea) for 20 seconds to measure oral microorganism in saliva and halitosis was measured by using Sensor Gas Chromatograph ODSA-P2 (FIS Inc., Hyogo, Japan). Amplification of 16s DNA molecule was performed to detect all kinds of oral microorganism and the detection of each oral bacteria was performed by amplifying 200 bp DNA molecule with specific gene primers which were based on functional gene. Results: Oral care habit and halitosis showed low correlation but significant difference was shown between brushing teeth before bed and CH3SH (r=0.21, p<0.05). Oral microorganisms and halitosis had low correlation with Streptococcus mutans and methyl mercaptan (r=0.25, p<0.05). Conclusion: Although it cannot be determined that S. mutans and S. sobrinus are the only causative bacteria which initiate halitosis in children, this study draws understanding which they have significant implications for halitosis in children.
