In this article, I discuss the viewpoint of a departed soul described in two books, 『Yeki (禮記)』와 『Mookja (墨子)』, both of which deal with the perspectives concerning the funeral ceremony during the period of the pre-QinDynast. The Warring States period in ancient China, the era of the great evolution in terms of Chinese society and history, was very active philosophically. The result was academic prosperity and competition among various schools, giving rise to the era of the Contention of a Hundred Schools of Thought (百家爭鳴). Knowledge of this phenomenon has been passed down to the current generation through many vicissitudes. Concerning ideas about the funeral ceremony during the Warring States period, each school argued that various aspects of the funeral ceremony contained important factors for living. Their theories had an enormous effect on manners and customs, religion, and social systems. The Confucianists and Mòzǐ school stood opposed to one another, showing clear differences viewpoints regarding the funeral ceremony. Therefore, I discuss these two viewpoints on a departed soul separately for a better understanding of perspectives on the funeral ceremonies described in 『Yeki (禮記)』와 『Mookja (墨子)』.
