Christian missionaries of the 19th century were the first to write a grammar of Kiswahili. Their efforts paved the way for Standard Kiswahili, which is a product of British colonial language policies in East Africa. In this study, we point out that missionary and colonial descriptive methods have left footprints in the language. For example, a group of nouns and noun phrases are widely described as prepositions and prepositional phrases to this day. We call these so-called prepositions 'colonial' prepositions and adverbs. There may be Bantu languages that genuinely cannot distinguish NP from PP, e.g. in the locative classes. Kiswahili is not one of them. We conclude that colonial prepositions and prepositional phrases should be re-analyzed as nouns and noun phrases. Until this is done, the description of the language will remain inadequate.
