The purpose of this paper is to analyze the mystery techniques of Sophocles' Oedipus the King. Since Oedipus the King is based on the well- known episode in Greek myth familiar to the Athenian audience, it is not easy for us to expect some mystical effects focusing on the uncertainty or ambiguity. Nonetheless, Sophocles shows us Oedipus the King as a remarkable mystery play, in which Oedipus had already done patricide and incest with his own mother in his past but he is forward to chase after finding who the patricide is. Through this mystical device, Oedipus the King can have its own spectators feel the intensive tension and interest even if its well known subject. Sophocles maximizes the mystical effects using the five types of discoveries described in Poetics by Aristotle: 1)discovery by innate or acquired physical marks or external mementoes such as a necklace or a ring; 2) fabricated discovery shown by characters ; 3) discovery by memory and 4) by the false reasoning or hypothesis, and 5) discovery resulted from the consequence of the previous actions.
