The aim of this paper is to investigate how Caryl Churchill represents the female difference on the stage. The playwrights have tried to create a visual illusion of reality on stage. According to Freud, female identity is represented as absence due to female lack of visible genital organs. In phallocentric society, the privileging male gaze distorts female representation and silences women. In representational theater, the audience internalizes the female stereotypes on stage passively. To avoid reproducing the female stereotype, Churchill employs seven songs to interrupt the flow of the action in Vinegar Tom. Instead of image based representation, she offers audio based representation to let the audience listen carefully to what women desire. When inserted songs comment on the action in the play, they subvert linear narration and undermine the rationality of the Symbolic. The songs have flowing mode of expression associated with the fluidity of female body. Churchill’s strategic experiment on fracturing the logic of language shares some common ground-staging difference-with Irigaray’s ecriture feminine. Irigaray develops an alternative form of writing in favor of discursive use of language to unsettle the binary opposition. To criticize the prejudicial visual image of women, Irigaray said that flat mirror bears the phallocentric gaze and it cannot fully understand what woman is. Instead, she claimed that speculum as the curved mirror is a way of embodied feminine writing. Speculum makes it possible to explore the previously invisible woman because of its concave surface which resembles the shape woman’s vagina. In Vinegar Tom, Churchill challenges the idea that woman is constructed in language and cherishes female difference on stage.
