Healthy long life is one of most important public concerns and the consumer demand for the diverse tea products has been increased in Korea, due to various bioactive functions of tea. Hence, rapid releasing of novel tea cultivars with favorable traits is recognized as an urgent requirement for the sustainable development of Korean tea industry. Even though the protection of plant varieties and genetic resources has been strengthened in industrialized countries in worldwide, there weren’t well established and functional national level breeding and genetic resources protection programs for tea plant in Korea. As a consequent, the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Agricultural Research & Extension Services and Jangwon Co., Ltd. have been launched a collaborative tea breeding program with Jeju National University, with an ultimate objective to uplift the tea industry in Jeju, Korea. Selections of promising individuals from genetic resource collections and cross hybridization populations were conducted. Conventional tea breeding methods of selection and cross hybridization were conducted for the collected elite tea mother bushes from Korea and foreign countries and through the evaluation process, the several promising chance seedlings were selected and the elite ones were released as novel cultivars. Current study paves the way for filling the existing gaps in tea breeding in Korea.
