2007년 이후 한국의 생체간이식 수는 큰 변화가 없지만, 뇌사자 장기이식 수는 급격히 늘어나 현재 연 1,500여건에이르고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 전체 이식 대기자 수도꾸준히 늘어가고 있어 전체 대기자의 15% 정도만이 이식을 받고 있는 실정이다. 그 중 뇌사자 간이식 대기자 수는2014년 기준으로 6,000명 가량으로 추정되며, 매년 생체간이식은 연 800∼900건, 뇌사자 간이식은 연 350∼400건이시행되고 있다. 따라서 전체 간이식 대기자의 20%만이 간이식을 받고 있는 실정이다(1).
