The incidence of preterm birth (PTB) is over 10% worldwide. PTB is the second most common cause of neonatal death in the world and the most common cause of sudden infant death in middle- and high-income countries. Environmental factors, including the microbiome, are known to be one of the most important factors in PTB, while maternal and fetal genetics and gene-environment interactions play a clear role in determining gestational age. It is known that the vaginal microbiome dysbiosis affects the metabolite profile of cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) and the gestational period of human pregnancy. Investigation of PTB associated with metabolites of vaginal microbiome dysbiosis has already been reported using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
